Spelthorne Leisure Centre, Staines-upon-Thames

9 Jul 2025 at 11:20 AM

Spelthorne Borough Council has set out to deliver the UK’s first combined wet and dry community leisure centre designed to meet the rigorous Passivhaus standard—one of the most energy-efficient certifications in the world. A key focus was placed on achieving a highly insulated, thermal bridge-free, and airtight building envelope. To optimise energy performance, the building’s orientation was reconfigured: pools were positioned on the south side to take advantage of solar gain, while the sports hall, squash courts, fitness suite, and studios were located on the north side. These were separated by ‘transition zones’—such as changing rooms and corridors—to reduce unwanted heat transfer.

Reversible heat pumps serve as the primary source of heating and cooling, whilst domestic hot water is produced using a two-stage heat pump system. The entire building is mechanically ventilated through high-efficiency systems that adjust in real time based on occupancy and demand, thereby minimising energy use. Many spaces incorporate a mixed-mode ventilation strategy, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling during warmer periods. Additionally, heat is recovered from pool backwash water and used to preheat fresh water for the pools.
