What does acoustic consultancy involve?

Acoustic consultancy covers the assessment of noise and sound insulation requirements for a development from planning stage through to completion. It typically includes reviewing planning conditions and noise survey results, specifying construction details to achieve the required acoustic performance, and advising on the testing required at completion under Part E or BREEAM.

At what stage should an acoustic consultant be appointed?

The earlier the better. Appointing an acoustic consultant at RIBA Stage 1 or 2 allows acoustic requirements to be designed in from the outset rather than retro-fitted, which is typically more cost-effective. For planning applications, a Noise Impact Survey may be required before planning is granted.

What is Part E of the Building Regulations?

Part E sets minimum standards for sound insulation between dwellings and between dwellings and other parts of a building. It applies to new build and material change of use in England and Wales. Compliance is typically demonstrated by following Robust Standard Details (RSDs) or by post-construction sound insulation testing.

Can Build Energy advise on BREEAM acoustic credits?
